School’s Out: A Summertime of Learning
Research tells us that students who do not participate in summer learning opportunities begin each new school year up to two months behind students who do participate in educational opportunities, including day camps, organized sports, and trips to the zoo, park or library. Summer learning opportunities don’t have to be expensive. They just have to be engaging and fun. Here are a few tips to consider:
- Visit your local library and sign up your children for the summer reading program. Be an example to them by doing some reading yourself.
- Use the library to explore your children’s interests and nurture their curiosity.
- Check out the free children’s programs at your local museum.
- Plan low-cost (and sometimes free), educational field trips to local parks, nature centers and zoos.
- Research camps offered by your local recreation center or community arts center. These camps often have an educational or enrichment focus.
- Plan day trips to historical sites in your state.
- Practice math daily, such as fractions during cooking or measuring items in the house.
- Encourage outdoor physical activity and limit TV viewing.
- Participate in community service projects together, such as Meals on Wheels.
- Preview concepts and materials your child will begin learning in the fall by talking with teachers at that grade level.
Most parents find it helpful to keep a schedule during the summer. Continuing daily routines that involve structure and limits provide balance and keep kids engaged. When you do find summer programs that interest you, look for the following:
- A safe, structured learning environment
- Low student-to-staff ratios
- Activities that are age appropriate, interesting and engaging
- Balanced programming that provides opportunities for physical activities and opportunities for educational enrichment
